Hvítserkur – The Troll of Iceland

Description

Hvítserkur rising from the sea on the Vatnsnes Peninsula in North Iceland. This extraordinary 15-metre-high basalt sea stack has been sculpted by the sea into a shape often compared to a dragon or giant creature drinking from the water. Icelandic folklore tells a different story — that Hvítserkur is a troll caught by the rising sun and turned to stone. I photographed the scene to capture the isolation of the rock against the wild Icelandic coastline. Hvítserkur, Vatnsnes Peninsula, North Iceland
